How Are Spiders Getting Into My Home?

Have you ever stopped and wondered to yourself how the spider running across your bathroom floor at midnight (that nearly gave you a heart attack) got inside? It can be thought-provoking for sure. It’s easy to imagine how flies get inside. All it takes is an open window or door. It can’t be that simple for spiders. Or can it?

Invasion Is Easier Than It Seems

Surprisingly enough, home invasion isn’t as hard as it may appear, especially for an insect that is several sizes smaller than us. Though humans require large doors or other openings to enter homes, spiders only need a small gap or crack in a foundation to squeeze their way inside and most of the time they don’t even need that. They can sneak past our home’s defenses in the simplest of ways. For instance, if your exterior doors do not have door sweeps, no matter how tightly closed they may seem, chances are spiders will be able to slip under them and invade your home, literally, through your front door. In the same way, if your window screens are torn or their frame seals have breaks in them, spiders could use these areas to crawl inside, causing problems.

What’s even crazier is that after spiders have invaded, all it takes is one breeding cycle for your house to be crawling with them. Keep in mind that the common house spider can lay around 250 eggs at a time. When you take a moment to think about this, you may realize that it only takes one female spider carrying eggs to begin a significant invasion.

One good thing to consider is where spiders are coming from. What introduced them to your property in the first place? You may not like the answer. Spiders are most often invited onto your property by the presence of other pests. That’s right, your home has eight-legged pests because it first had other pests. Spiders go where they can find food.  So if you are finding spiders in your home, chances are, their food is there also.
