What is an Asian lady beetle?
Asian lady beetles are a type of insect that in the right environment are considered to be beneficial. They eat aphids, mites, mealy bugs, and other species of plant eating insects that can harm crops and garden plants.
Asian lady beetles can come in a variety of colors including red, orange, yellow, brown, or shiny black. Females have various dark markings on their bodies. Males are often void of any markings. Adults range in size from 1/31 – 3/8 of an inch in length, and they are broadly oval shape- similar to that of half a pea.
Why do I have them?
Asian lady beetles generally live outdoors, but can become problematic inside of homes especially in the late fall. Asian lady beetles will gather on the sunny side of homes, garages, barns, and sheds. They find their way inside through cracks and crevices as they look for a warm, safe shelter to overwinter in. Once inside they will hide behind walls, in attics, and in crawl spaces. Again in the spring these menaces will become problematic in homes and buildings as they travel back outdoors to eat and reproduce.
Are they dangerous?
Asian lady beetles are not dangerous to people or property. They do not bite or sting and therefore are considered to be mostly nuisance pests. However, they can invade your home in large numbers and become a huge annoyance there in. Asian lady beetles can be a threat to fruit crops because they will eat and damage ripe fruit.
Can I do it myself?
Do-it-yourself Asian lady bug control is not recommended. Retail do-it-yourself pesticides are often ineffective and will end up costing you more in both time and money. They can also be dangerous for you, your family, pets, and plants if they are not mixed, placed or used properly.
