What is a pigeon?
Adult pigeons grow to between 11 and 12 ½ inches in length; they can weigh up to 13 ounces. Most adults have a light gray body with a darker colored head, shoulders and breast; they may have rust or metallic colored feathers along their breast, neck and head. Their beak is a pinkish-gray color and they have dark bars running across their wings and one bar going across their tail. Pigeons are also referred to as rock doves, and are a common pest bird found in both rural and urban environments.
Why do I have them?
Pigeons live together in large flocks and nest and roost in roof eaves, gutters, ventilation systems, and chimneys of homes, garages, and commercial properties. They are attracted to areas that provide them with easy access to food including seeds, grains, and any scraps (pizza crust, popcorn, French fries) of food that they come across.
Are they dangerous?
Pigeons are a dangerous pest, not because they are aggressive or because they bite, but because they carry and spread a variety of diseases like cryptococcosis, salmonella, toxoplasmosis, and histomplasmosis- caused by a fungus that grows in pigeon feces. Pigeon droppings build up on walkways and sidewalks and can lead to slip and fall injuries on your property; the droppings are also very corrosive and can damage your home or commercial property.
