What are voles?
Voles are often referred to as meadow mice because they are commonly found living in field and meadows, digging underground burrows. The best way to describe a vole is short and stocky. An adults stout body generally ranges in length from 5-8 inches and their fur is dark brown to black in color. They have short powerful legs, a short fur covered tail, small dark eyes and partially hidden ears.
Why do I have them?
Voles tend to invade properties that have large open lawns or are adjacent to a parks or golf courses. Voles like to burrow in large open areas that have ample amounts of vegetation for them to feed on. Voles are active and breed year-round, this means that a small vole problem can quickly become a very large vole problem.
Are they dangerous?
Voles rarely enter the inside of homes and other businesses and aren’t known to cause any major health concerns for people. However, an infestation of voles on your property can lead to extensive damage to your lawn and property as they create their elaborate tunnels right under the surface of the ground. Also, voles are herbivores and their feeding can cause significant damage to both vegetable gardens, flower gardens, and trees.
Can I do it myself?
Once there is an established vole population on your property they are extremely tough to get rid of. Voles spend most of their time in tunnels underneath of the ground, this makes being able to find all of the invading voles and their nests very difficult. Trying to remove a vole infestation without professional help, generally leads to nothing but a quick re-infestation.
